The tarpaulin maintains optimal moisture conditions, drains precipitation from the surface of the swath and protects it from drying out by the sun and wind. Aerobic humic fermentation is therefore optimized. Composting under tarpaulin also minimizes juice seeps.

The production of compost is a delicate balance between oxygenation and the temperature of the material. A real follow-up is necessary. Oxygen is the key to the success of composting: it allows the development of aerobic bacteria and it is they that allow the degradation of organic matter while releasing heat. In the absence of air, anaerobic bacteria develop and generate odorous gases that can be a source of inconvenience for the neighborhood .

Oxygen is essential to the life of organisms. Good ventilation will result in a good decomposition of organic matter (if the other parameters are present).
